Lot 319
A Monumental Shearwater Pottery Bowl, c. 1945, jiggered by Peter Anderson, decorated by Walter Inglis Anderson with an incised and slip-decorated design of ducks and waves, unmarked, height 8 5/16 in., diameter 14 1/2 in. to 14 3/4 in Note: This monumental and highly accomplished Shearwater Pottery bowl exemplifies the true genius and talent of Walter Anderson. Created c. 1945, the design and rendering of the ducks and waves are motifs which appear later in his linocut prints and the watercolors he creates at Horn Island. Rather than a symmetrical, repetitive pattern, the design of the bowl is a continuous varying scene of ducks flying above cresting waves and bubbling water. The rarity of this bowl in terms of its size, beauty, and strong aesthetic should not be understated. It is a truly unique example of Shearwater Pottery and a wonderful masterpiece by Walter Anderson. Exhibited at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, MS, in "One World, Two Artists: John Alexander and Walter Anderson", January 1-April 30, 2012. Provenance: Purchased from the artist, and thence by descent in a family collection.
