William Gurney writes from Clinton, Louisiana on May 26th, 1864 asking the Governor of Confederate Louisiana to forgive him for having distilled liquor illegally, a crime for with he was adjudged guilty in the court of J.B. Smith and for which he was ordered to pay a fine of $10,000, Gurney seeks relief from both the fine and from 3 months of imprisonment to which he was also sentenced, he further explains the circumstances of the affair.
