[NAVAL HISTORY ALS A Samuel Plimsoll (English, 1824-1898) autograph letter signed, to an unknown gentleman, on blindstamped stationery dated Feb 5th, 1873, Victoria Street, S.W., asking for support in his quest for shipping reforms, sight 9.75in x 7.5 in., framed E100-200 Note: Plimsoll was a British politician and reformer who devoted a large part of his energy to shipping reforms and the plight of sailors One of the reforms dealt with overloaded ships; the mark which indicated the limit to which a ship may be safely loaded became known as the plimsoll line.
