[Naval History], manuscript and illustrated document, by John Thomas Newton, Commander of the Home Squadron, U.S. Navy, 1852-1855, eleven pages, 7 1/8 in. x 5 in., illustrating, in great detail, the flag signals used by the ships Columbia, Princeton, Cyane, Albany, Decatur and Fulton, mounted on paper, 15 in. x 11 in., extracted from a 19th c. scrap book. Note: The Home Squadron, part of the U.S. Navy, was organized in 1838 Its ships were assigned to protect coastal commerce, aid ships in distress, suppress piracy and the slave trade and make coastal surveys. It was discontinued after the outbreak of the Civil War, when the Union blockade forced a reassignment of ships to close off Southern ports. John Thomas Newton (1793-1857) was appointed in 1809 as a midshipman. He served on the Hornet and commanded the steamers Fulton and Missouri and the navy yard in Pensacola, FL He became flag officer and commodore of the Home Squadron from 1852-1855 and commanded the navy yard in Portsmouth, NH, from 1855-1857.
