Provenance: Gaspar Cusachs, entrepreneur, historian and collector, (1855-1929); The Gaspar Cusachs Collection, loaned to the Louisiana State Museum, New Orleans, LA (c. 1909-2016). Note: In 1878, there were 4,046 deaths from yellow fever in New Orleans, making that year the city’s third-worst yellow fever epidemic and its worst epidemic of the disease after the Civil War. Between 1817 and 1905, over 40,000 people in New Orleans died of yellow fever, before the 1905 discovery of mosquito-transmission of the disease.
