Description:

Noel Rockmore (American/Louisiana, 1928-1995), "David Amram, Composer", 1961, watercolor on paper, signed, dated, titled and localized "Fire Island" lower center, inscribed "Summer" upper right, 10 in. x 13 1/4 in., framed; accompanied by Life magazine article "Music-Making Swinger Close Up - David Amram, A Rising American Composer", by Diana Lurie. Note: David Amram is a world-renowned composer, multi-instrumentalist and author. Lifelong friend of Noel Rockmore, Amram and the artist met while young children on the shores of Harvey Cedars, New Jersey. Their paths would cross again when they both attended Putney School in Vermont, where Amram was in the same grade as Rockmore’s younger sister. At the time when the work offered here was created, Rockmore, when not in New Orleans, would frequent New York and visit Amram who was “at the heart of the ‘Beat’ movement with Alan Ginsburg, Larry Rivers, Jack Kerouac and many others.” Together, they would take trips to Fire Island where this watercolor was likely painted. In the early 1950s, Amram started his musical career playing the French horn in the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. An influential composer, Amram wrote the musical scores for films such as Splendor in the Grass and The Manchurian Candidate as well as the score for the Arthur Miller play After the Fall. From 1964-1966, he was Lincoln Center Theatre’s Composer and Music Director, and in 1966 he was the first New York Philharmonic Composer in Residence. Amram also authored three memoirs about his life, work, and collaborations with Jack Kerouac. Currently, he is still composing and working on a string orchestra version of his Greenwich Village Portraits. Ref.: David Amram - Noel Rockmore. Dir. Rich and Tee Marvin. Perf.
