Rare Pair of American Classical Carved Mahogany Chests of Drawers, early 19th c., Philadelphia, each with outset frieze drawers, three graduated bowfront drawers flanked by columns, plinth base, turned feet, h. 44 1/2 in., w. 43 1/2 in., d. 24 1/4 in., old script notation "Willed to Mary Johnson M....of Reading/ Elizabeth M..../ Owner" found interior. Note: Certain features of the paired chests in this lot are related to furniture made by Philadelphia cabinetmakers such as Joseph Barry (1760-1838) and Anthony Quervelle (1789-1856), among others. Elements of Classical Philadelphia furniture in this lot include the spiral-turned columns with Corinthian capitals, the use of highly figured mahogany, and the overhanging frieze.
