Description:

Pair of American Rococo Carved Walnut Armchairs, mid-19th c., Charles H. White stamp on proper right legs, padded crests above a back exhibiting entwined dolphins amongst scrolling foliage; animal mask terminals, acanthus arm supports, cabriole legs headed by cabochons, paw feet, h. 35 in., w. 24 1/2 in., d. 24 in. Note: The design for this library chair is well known, and a related carved walnut armchair conserved by the Carnegie Museum bearing a stenciled label for Charles White (Philadelphia, 1796-1876) is illustrated in Busch, et. al. Rococo, the Continuing Curve, p. 200, fig. 9. A chair nearly identical to this lot, also bearing a "C.W..." stamp, was sold at Neal Auction as lot 359 on July 12, 2008. Other examples attributed to White were sold in these rooms as lot 135, June 27, 2009 and lot 302, April 21, 2012. The form seen here appears as the frontice piece drawing of a library chair in Edward Strahan's Mr. Vanderbilt's House and Collection. Boston: George Barrie. A photograph of William Vanderbilt sitting in the chair is illustrated in Howe, et. al. Herter Bros., Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age, p. 201. An example of this design was installed in the library of the c. 1860 Asa Packer Mansion in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania illustrated in Kenneth Ames, Magazine Antiques, "George Henkels, Philadelphia Cabinet Maker" Oct. 1973, p. 645, fig. 9. Henkles' large firm was at 172 Chestnut Street, blocks away from White's workshop at 250 Chestnut Street.
