Description:

Pair of William and Mary Marquetry Candlestands, c. 1690-1710, octagonal tops with floral scrolls, oyster veneered edge, square tapered standards, tripartite plinths, scrolled legs, h. 35 3/4 in., top dia. 14 3/4 in. Note: An example of this pair of candlestands/torcheres can be seen in English Furniture, 1660-1714, From Charles II to Queen Anne, p. 279. Note: The use of naturalistic floral marquetry and oyster veneers on this pair of torcheres is characteristic of English furniture produced in the mid-to-late 17th century. Interestingly, the tapering and often faceted standard was introduced in the late 1680s, replacing the spiral-turned or barley twist standard. Similar candlestands are illustrated in Adam Bowett’s English Furniture 1660-1714 (pls. 9:10, 9:11) Ref.: Adam Bowett. English Furniture 1660-1714: From Charles II to Queen Anne. England: Antique Collector’s Club, 2002, p. 279, pls. 9:10 and 9:11.
