Description:

Palmer Schoppe (American/California, 1912-2001, act. Charleston, SC, 1934), "Guitar and Bass", acrylic on paper, signed lower right, titled, "Charleston Renaissance Gallery" and artist's address labels en verso, 30 in. x 22 in., framed. Provenance: Charleston Renaissance Gallery, Charleston, SC. Note: While studying in New York City with Thomas Hart Benton, Palmer Schoppe became fascinated with Depression Era jazz and the Harlem art scene. This love of music and his interest in incorporating elements of jazz into his paintings stayed with the artist throughout his career. After completing his art education at the Yale School of Fine Arts and The Art Students League of New York, Schoppe returned to California, where he had lived during his childhood; on his way home, he made stops in South Carolina and Louisiana. Based on his experiences in the South Carolina Low Country, the Gullah community and New Orleans, Schoppe then created a collection of paintings, drawings, and prints that reflected jazz, rhythm, and blues themes, such as the painting offered here, “Guitar and Base.”
