Description:

Paul Colin (French, 1892-1985), "Fuchsia and Orange Roses", oil on canvas, signed lower left, old label from Delf Cadres d'Art en verso, 29 in. x 21 1/4 in., in a painted and gilded frame. Note: Colin was the designer responsible for many of the iconic poster images of Art Deco and Jazz Age Parisian life. He was born in Nancy and studied at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in that city. One of his first jobs was to design a movie poster for a prominent French director. This work appealed to Colin and set him on his artistic path. His poster of "La Revue Nege," in honor of his lover Josephine Baker, is the work that launched his career. The response to this image was so overwhelmingly positive, he was asked to join the theaters' artistic staff. While the affair between Baker and Colin was brief, they remained lifelong friends; Baker used Colin's illustrations in her 1927 memoir. Colin continued to design posters and sets for theater and film, in addition to painting. In 1930 he opened the first school for poster art that was attended by many of the rising stars of this particular art form.
