[PAUL MORPHY/CHESS , "Chess Games Record Book", 67 manuscript pages in brown calf notebook, being a record of 39 chess games played by Jerome Meunier (1825-1909) circa 1858-1861; the record book also includes 3 problem chess games devised by Meunier which were published in the "Sunday Delta" newspaper in 1859. E400/500 Note: Game 25 was played against Paul Morphy (1837-1884) on Monday May 7, 1860. Meunier (black) was defeated in 27 moves by Morphy (white), who was acclaimed by many as the greatest chess master of all times. Such a brilliant player was Morphy that by the age of only 21 he was the world's champion chess player. Shortly thereafter, he abandoned his public chess career and withdrew into a life of seclusion.
