Description:

Paul Ninas (American/New Orleans, 1903-1964), "Procession", oil on masonite, signed lower right, 24 in. x 48 in., framed. Note: Paul Ninas was an early, influential modernist of the South, often described as the “Dean of Modern Art” in New Orleans. In December 1940, the Delgado Museum in New Orleans presented a major Picasso exhibition organized by the Museum of Modern of Art. The show made an impact on Ninas, for his work becomes increasingly abstract from this point forward. The painting offered here certainly shows the influence of Picasso with its cubist figures and strong geometry. The brightly colored composition favors primary colors for the figures set against a green ground.
