Description:

Paul Sawyier (American/Kentucky, 1865-1917), "Kentucky River Mill", watercolor on paper, signed lower right, 11 7/8 in. x 17 7/8 in., framed. Note: Known as the “Kentucky Impressionist,” Ohio-born Paul Sawyier was renowned for his atmospheric watercolors of his childhood home of Frankfort, Kentucky and the surrounding areas. He would often paint in his studio on his houseboat, which he used to navigate through the waterways of the Kentucky River. His sensitive watercolors offer crisp details, and, as is noted in Estill Curtis Pennington’s A Southern Collection, “many of his works have a uniform light quality that tends to dissolve form into glowing color abstractions.” In the lot offered here, Sawyier’s talent shines in the precision with which he executes the texture of the dense greenery, rippling water, as well as the minute details of the mill in the background.
