E500-750 Note: Percy Harmon Marble served as government Indian agent on several Native American Indian reservations from 1911 to 1926. Born in Pawnee, Nebraska, Marble worked and owned several newspapers in his home state. Marble sold his newspaper business in 1910 when he received a federal commission to serve as an Indian agent Over the years, Marble was assigned to the Menominee Indians in Wisconsin, Sioux Indians in South Dakota, Navajo and Hopi Indians in Arizona and Pueblo Indians in New Mexico. During his tenure as an agent, Marble documented the culture and way of life of Native American Indians in the early twentieth century through his photographs. These fascinating photographs show lingering tribal customs as well as the assimilation of western culture. Upon retiring in 1926, Marble moved with his family to Las Vegas and eventually served as mayor.
