Description:

Peter Copmann (Danish, 1794-1850, act. Charleston, 1835), "Robert Nicolas-Charles Bochsa, the Harpist (1789-1856)", 1837, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, sitter identified lower center, 36 1/4 in. x 30 in., framed. Provenance: Southern Museum Collection. Exh.: Fort Lauderdale Museum of the Arts, "Margaret Wakeman Collection", no. 5, 1963; The Mobile Art Gallery, "Museum Masters", 1964. Note: Danish-born Peter Copmann studied art at l’Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1818; he then traveled to Dresden, Hamburg, and Copenhagen to exhibit his works. In 1834, Copmann immigrated to the United States and worked in Brooklyn before making his way south to Charleston, New Orleans, and Louisville. He advertised his services in the city directories, and his works were reviewed by local newspapers, such as the Charleston Courier, which not only praised his talents in painting, but also his discovery of a fixative for pastel drawings that would allow the paper to be immersed in water without causing damage. Nicolas-Charles Bochsa, a musician and composer, studied at the Paris Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Plagued by legal troubles and scandals, Bochsa traveled frequently and gave concerts throughout the United States and Europe – avoiding France, where he was wanted for fraud and counterfeiting. Because both Copmann and Bochsa traveled throughout the southern United States, it is not surprising that they met in New Orleans. The resulting portrait offered here depicts Bochsa standing next to his harp with sheet music in his left hand, prominently displaying the sitter’s name.
