Peter Joseph Lawrence Mars (American/Louisiana, 1874-1949), "Baptism", oil on board, signed "P.L. Mars" and dated "NOLA 1932" lower right, label en verso reading "HOPF Gallery, House of Frames and Paintings, Inc., Columbia, SC", 25 1/2 in. x 40 1/4 in., in a painted and giltwood frame. Note: Born in Houma, Louisiana in 1874, Peter Mars worked as a sculptor, painter, and art teacher at the Isaac Delgado Central Trade School. Mars showed his art in exhibitions at the New Orleans Arts and Crafts Club and the New Orleans Art League, from which he won an award. The painting illustrated here depicts a scene of an adult outdoor baptism, which was a common practice in both black and white Protestant churches in rural North Louisiana through the 1950s.
