Philippe Régis de Keredern de Trobriand (French/New Orleans, 1816-1897), "Cypress Trees, Louisiana Bayou", 1877, oil on canvas, monogrammed and dated lower right, handwritten label identifying artist as "General de Trobriand" en verso, 12 in. x 9 in., period gilt and stenciled frame. Provenance: Estates of Milburn and Nancy Calhoun, owners of Pelican Publishing Company, New Orleans, LA Note: As a young man, Philippe Regis de Trobriand immigrated from France to New York City. During the Civil War, Trobriand served with the Union forces, where he rose to rank of general. During Reconstruction, President Ulysses Grant assigned Trobriand to serve with the Occupation forces in New Orleans. When he retired, Trobriand and his wife remained in the French Quarter where he tended his rose garden and painted.
