Description:

An American Renaissance Bronze-Mounted, Ebonized and Gilt-Incised Sofa, c. 1865, attributed to Pottier and Stymus, New York, shaped back centered by a bronze roundel, padded arms terminating in putti, incised seat rail, shell carved legs, hoof feet, casters, height 34 in., width 76 in., depth 36 in Note: The large bronze mounts dominating the arm terminals and the distinctive upholstered on this sofa are similar to those on chairs by Pottier and Stymus at the Metropolitan Museum (acc. 1979.35.2) and the Brooklyn Museum (acc. 1992.89). A nearly identical sofa, also attributed to Pottier and Stymus was sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 546, February 6, 1999. The bronze mounts are likely from Pierre E. Guerin (1843-1911) who established his New York foundry in 1864 providing mounts for renowned cabinet makers such as Leon Marcotte and Pottier and Stymus.
