Lot 224
Probably Nazarene School (German/Italian, early 19th c.), "The Marriage of the Virgin Mary", oil on canvas, unsigned, 18 3/4 in. x 14 1/8 in., in an antique cove-molded giltwood frame. E1200-1800 Note Unlike the contemporaneous Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in England, the Nazarene School of Germans living in Rome drifted into relative obscurity after the mid-19th c.. They too rejected traditional approaches to representational art, in favor of a return to the naive qualities found in Italian painters of the 15th c.. The Nazarenes were similarly influenced by their regional predecessors, the Flemish and Germanic "Primitives"; their works were well received until they became accused of purposeful primitivism by critics including the Swiss art historian Jacob Burckhardt.
