Lot 34
Description:
Probably Studio or Follower of Jacob Jordaens (Flemish, 1593-1678), "The Penitent St. Peter" mid-to-late 17th c., oil on canvas, unsigned, 44 in. x 38 in., in a modern frame.
- Provenance: Provenance: Dr. James F. Adams, 1977; Reading Public Museum, Reading, PA~ Note: Both Jordaens and his contemporary Antwerp colleague, the famous and precociously gifted Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641), are known in the earliest phases of their careers (c. 1617-19) to have painted life-studies of interesting local personalities, sometimes even side-by-side, jointly recording the same subject in the same sitting. A "character head" of Abraham Grapheus, for example (a functionary of the Antwerp painters' guild, and a favorite subject of artists) was painted from the left in an oil sketch by Jordaens (in the Louvre), while Van Dyck seems simultaneously to have made a corresponding sketch from the sitter's right (now in Berlin). Jordaens painted at least eight separate studies of Grapheus, of which a characteristic oil sketch of his head, upper torso, and hands (in the Detroit Institute of Arts) has long been suspected of having been posed as a model for a potential "Penitent Saint Peter." No such autograph composition by Jordaens is known to survive; but this large, virtually life-size half-length painting seems to reflect such a lost model.
