Description:

Rebecca Davenport (American/Washington, D.C., b. 1943), "Dyzigotes", 1973, acrylic on canvas, initialed "RD" and dated lower left, 52 1/4 in. x 52 1/4 in., framed. Provenance: Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: A native of Alexandria, VA, Rebecca Davenport studied art at Pratt Institute and the University of North Carolina and quickly gained acclaim in the art community of Washington, D.C. in the 1970s and 1980s. Davenport’s early work draws heavily on the characteristics of photorealism including many portraits similar to the work offered here. These portraits are often of average subjects in mundane settings, such as the tattered sofa in “Dyzigotes.” The artist’s paintings are in many private and public collections, including the National Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Gallery and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Art in America described her work in 1979, "Davenport provides an extended double take beneath the mask of the ordinary. She has assumed a much less comfortable expression at once powerful, unexpected and strange." Ref.: Tannous, David. “Washington, D.C. Rebecca Davenport”. Art in America. Oct. 1979, No. 6, p. 30, ill. p. 30.
