Description:

Reuben Robert Kramer (American, 1909-1999), "Mother and Child", 1937, patinated bronze, verdigris patina, signed and dated on base "Roman Bronze Works N.Y., Cast No. 1, ©1937 Kramer", h. 48 in., w. 14 1/2 in., d. 11 in. Note: Reuben Kramer was an acclaimed sculptor from Baltimore known for his sensitive depictions of the human figure. Kramer studied at the Maryland Institute’s Rinehart School of Sculpture. In 1934, he won the coveted Prix de Rome and spent the next two years studying at the American Academy in Rome. The sculptures offered here were created in 1937, the year after he returned from his studies in Italy. Kramer’s sculptures went through a rigorous, multi-step process of creation from clay to bronze. Unlike some artists, who leave work to assistants, he participated in his sculpture from beginning to end. The two sculptures here demonstrate complete mastery of the human form inspired by classical Greek and Roman traditions. In 1978, the Baltimore Museum of Art presented a fifty-year retrospective exhibition of Kramer’s work. Despite many commissions, achieving great success and renown, Kramer’s work rarely appears on the market.
