Reverend Russell Gillespie (American/North Carolina, b. 1922), "Mountain Cabin Scene", carved wood sculpture, 22 in. x 23 in. E2500- 3500 Provenance: Knoke Galleries, Atlanta, GA., 1998. Note: Born in a log cabin in rural North Carolina, Russell Gillespie raised vegetables to support his family and became an ordained a Baptist minister in 1950. In the late 1960s, Reverend Gillespie began to carve vignettes of cabin scenes from roots and knots of trees, as well as birds and animals from gourds. In this engaging sculpture, a man leaves his cabin to descend the stairs with bucket in hand to be filled by the dipper hanging next to the imaginary stream. Surrounding the cabin are a bird in a tree and several deer and small animals.
