Richard Clague (American/Louisiana, 1821-1873), "Fishermen on the Lousiana Bayou", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 15in. x 20in., in an ornate period giltwood frame. E20000-30000 Provenance: A New Orleans Estate. Note: Richard Clague is the founder and most important artist working in the Louisiana landscape tradition during the mid-nineteenth century. Clague studied art at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and with French panorama painter Leon Pomarede in New Orleans. In 1856, he was commissioned by French Emperor Napoleon III to document the Lesseps expedition in search of the source of the Nile River. After serving in the Civil War, Clague turned toward the swamps and marshes of southern Louisiana as a continual source of inspiration for his paintings. In this painting, Clague successfully captures the unique atmospheric quality of the Louisiana swamp as two fishermen venture out for the day.
