Description:

Richard Fayerweather Babcock (American, 1887-1954), "With Love from Uncle Sam (version of the enlistment poster 'Join the Navy: The Service for Fighting Men')", c. 1941, tempera on board, signed and inscribed en verso, 40 in. x 30 in., unframed.
Note: The Midwesterner Richard Fayerweather Babcock studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Herron Art Institute of Indianapolis, and in Munich, Germany. Babcock taught at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the School of the Art Institute, and worked as an illustrator for Encyclopedia Britannica, specializing in natural history subjects.
Unlike most other government agencies who submitted their requests for posters to the Division of Pictorial Publicity, the U.S. Navy published their own posters. Babcock designed the enlistment poster to encourage young men to join the Navy, which was "the service for fighting men".
