Rise Delmar-Ochsner
American/Louisiana, 1944-2025
"For Queen Noor"
acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas
2000, signed and dated lower right, signed, titled and dated en verso, unframed.

Note: Rise Delmar-Ochsner was born and raised in New York City where her mother was an artist. She graduated from Columbia University and later attended Tulane Medical School as one of only a handful of women accepted under the ten percent quota of the time. In New Orleans, she became a successful ophthalmologist and kept a thriving practice until becoming a full-time artist.

She discovered her own love of art while at Columbia and continued to paint through medical school and beyond. An in-demand portraitist, Ochsner earned commissions to paint Mick Jagger for a poster for his New Orleans tour stop, Carol Burnett's cat and fifty famous chefs including Leah Chase, Emeril Lagasse and Susan Spicer on behalf of Robert and Margrit Mondavi, all winners of the Robert Mondavi Culinary Award of Excellence.

As stated in her obituary from February of this year: "Rise achieved things that were both extremely difficult and extremely rare in her own time, not to mention impossible to imagine replicating today... Rise was never constrained by society's conventions, glass ceiling, or personal tragedies." It was only fitting that Ochsner, a remarkable woman, was commissioned to paint this striking and colorful portrait of the poised and equally notable Queen Noor of Jordan.

Born Lisa Halaby to an Arab American family, she was a member of the first class at Princeton that included women in 1969 and received a degree in Architecture and Urban Planning. She worked on urban planning projects internationally and was a well-accomplished professional when she married King Hussein of Jordan in 1978. They stayed together until his tragic passing in 1999. In 1985, Queen Noor founded the Noor Al Hussein Foundation and later the King Hussein Foundation in 1999. "The non-profit non-governmental organizations which Queen Noor chairs were influenced by her innovative, holistic approaches to regional development challenges… the foundations' programs have advanced development thinking in Jordan and the Middle East through pioneering best practice models in the fields of poverty eradication, women and youth empowerment, microfinance, health, and arts as a medium for social development and cross-cultural exchange. They provide training and capacity-building expertise in these areas in the broader Arab and Asian regions."
