Description:

Robert Gordy (American/Louisiana, 1933-1986), "The Green Nile", acrylic on canvas, signed and dated "'68", 53 1/2 in. x 41 1/4 in.

  • Notes: Note: Gordy reached the height of his success during the 1960s and 1970s, when "The Green Nile" was completed. Born and raised in Louisiana, the artist was influenced by a variety of modern movements: Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and African Tribal Art. Gordy studied under the Abstract Expressionist Hans Hoffman (1880-1966). Known for meticulous attention to detail, this dream-like painting also demonstrates Gordy's incorporation of female nudes and use of dynamic repeated patterns in flat closely hued landscapes. Gordy's works are in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
