Lot 725
Robert Grafton (American, 1876-1936, active New Orleans, 1916-20), "Laundry Day in the Courtyard, French Quarter", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 24 in. x 20 in., in a period Art Nouveau frame. E30000- 50000 Note: Like many artists who visited New Orleans, Robert Grafton found the hidden patios and courtyards of the French Quarter fascinating. During the early and mid twentieth century, these patios and courtyards were scenes of daily life of the working class people who lived in the French Quarter. As depicted in the painting "Laundry Day in the Courtyard, French Quarter" the weekly chore of washing and then draping the lines with drying clothes was a common sight. Midwesterners Robert Grafton and Louis Oscar Griffith earned great critical acclaim for their New Orleans paintings. The two artists exhibited with the Art League, Artist's Association and had a two man show at the St. Charles Hotel. Upon his return to Chicago, Grafton's New Orleans paintings were exhibited at the Paul Theobald gallery.
