Description:

Robert Lewis Reid (American, 1862-1929), 'In the Woods, Above Colorado Springs', oil on panel, (1920-7) signed lower right, sight 11.5in. x 15.5in. Provenance: Acquired from the artist and then by descent in a New Orleans family. Note: Born in Massachusetts and trained at the Boston Museum School, American Impressionist Robert Lewis Reid rebelled against the established traditionalism and regionalism exemplified by the Boston School and Edmond Tarbell. In 1885, Reid left the New York Art Students League to study at the Academy Julien in Paris. Reid is perhaps best remembered for his award winning large-scale murals painted for Chicago's Columbian Exposition 1892), The American Pavilion at the Paris Exposition (1900), and the Fine Arts Building at the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco ( 1915). Later Reid became affiliated with the revolutionary moderns known as 'The Ten'. This painting dates to the period of the 1920s when the artist moved to the West to teach at the Broadmoor Academy in Colorado Springs, until 1927 when he suffered a massive stroke. Reid later moved back to New York, and died two years later.
