Robert Malcolm Rucker (American/Louisiana, 1932-2001), "French Quarter Antique Store", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 16 in. x 20 in., framed. Provenance: Neal Auction Company, June 5, 2004, lot 395. Note: Artists have gravitated towards the French Quarter of New Orleans for over a century in order to capture the charm and unique architecture that appeals to locals and tourists alike. Many of these artists, such as Clarence Millet, Alberta Kinsey and Colette Pope Heldner, made their living by selling paintings of Jackson Square and the famous thoroughfares of the Quarter. In contrast, Robert Rucker, in the work offered here, offers a rare, intimate view of an antique store and sidewalk, with the carefully composed diagonal composition and empty chair inviting the viewer into the scene. As he developed his mature style, Rucker blended the stylized realism of John McCrady, his mentor, with the painterly impressionism of Knute Heldner, whose work he greatly admired. The artists attention to detail and precise draftsmanship can be seen in his depictions of French Quarter architecture and in his many steamboat paintings. Ref.: Saward, Susan.
