Description:

Robert Wadsworth Grafton (American, 1876-1936, active New Orleans 1916-20), 'New Basin Canal, New Orleans', oil on canvasboard, unsigned Winsor & Newton, England label en verso, 11 in. x 15 in., in a period frame. E1500-2500 Provenance: Gift of the artist to his neighbors in Michigan City, Indiana during the 1930s. Note: Grafton used the verso of this painting as a palette for his oil paints. Note: Often accompanied by his fellow Midwesterner Louis Oscar Griffith, Robert Grafton made several painting trips to New Orleans from 1916 to 1921. To critical acclaim, Grafton and Griffith collaborated on a set of horse racing murals for the grand St. Charles Hotel. Grafton painted the scenic historic vistas of the French Quarter during his visits. Among his favorite views was the New Basin Canal, which he painted several times from different angles and times of the day.
