Description:

Robert Wadsworth Grafton (American, 1876-1936, active New Orleans, 1916-20), "St. Louis Cathedral-New Orleans", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 30 in. x 24 in., in a period giltwood frame. Accompanied by two Michigan City Library Association Catalogues from 1952 and 1997 where the painting is listed in both and reproduced in the latter. E25000-35000 Provenance: Collection of the Michigan City Public Library, Indiana, purchased from the Estate of Robert W. Grafton in 1939. Note: During the winters of 1917 and 1918, the Midwestern artists and friends, Robert Grafton and Louis Oscar Griffith traveled south to New Orleans to paint. Working in a color filled impressionist style, the two artists often worked side by side. The historic buildings, waterways and sights of New Orleans, and in particular the French Quarter, intrigued the artists. The New Basin Canal, French Market, St. Roch Cathedral and St. Louis Cathedral were picturesque sights that inspired the artist. One of the most well-recognized and historically significant buildings in the city, then and now, is the St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square. Grafton captured the cathedral at dusk as the setting sun bathed the building in a bluish light.
