Description:

Robert Wadsworth Grafton (American, 1876-1936), "French Quarter Courtyard", oil on canvas laid on board and masonite, signed and dated "1916" lower right, 16 in. x 20 in., in a period Arts and Crafts frame. E7000/9000 Note: The Midwesterner Robert Grafton studied art at the Chicago Art Institute and the Academie Julian in Paris. Like many artists of the day, Grafton found inspiration in the historic buildings and ambience of New Orleans' French Quarter, and between 1915 and 1928 he visited the city regularly. He was active in the New Orleans Art Association and a founding member of the Arts and Crafts Club. In collaboration with Louis Oscar Griffith, Grafton painted two murals for the St. Charles Hotel. In 1928 the hotel hosted a two-man exhibition of Grafton and Griffith scenic views of the city. The American Impressionist painting "French Quarter Courtyard" is a charming example of Grafton's work in New Orleans.
