Description:

Ronnie Landfield (American/New York, b. 1947), "The White Curtain", 1982, acrylic on canvas, signed, dated, titled, artist label, "Charles Cowles Gallery, Inc., NYC", and "Christie's, New York" labels en verso, 78 in. x 57 in., period frame. Provenance: Christie's, NY, sale #6961, lot 706, Feb. 24, 1990; Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: Ronnie Landfield's impressive body of work has been labeled Lyrical Abstraction, but he did not always paint with such vibrancy and freedom. In the 1960's, the artist first focused on minimalism, eventually finding the style too confining. As an artist in the energetic and creative hub of New York City during the mid-20th c., he befriended many of his contemporaries including John Chamberlain, Donald Judd, Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and Marisol, all of whom he saw regularly at the famous nightclub and restaurant, Max's Kansas City. Landfield is now recognized as one of the first artists to transition from the strict, linear forms of minimalism into a style more sensuous and soft in its abstraction. His huge canvases, as evidenced in the lot presented here, are saturated with rich hues separated into bold, determined segments.
