Lot 322
An American Classical Rosewood and Rosewood Grained Work Table, early 19th c., New York, case fitted with a single drawer over a work basket, scrolled legs, incurvate stretcher shelf, disc feet, casters, height 29 1/4 in., width 24 1/2 in., depth 18 1/2 in Note: A well-known collection of rosewood veneered furniture with Grecian scrolled legs appears on a bill of lading from Duncan Phyfe and Son to James L. Manning for Millford Plantation, SC. The legs and base of this work table are almost identical to those of the "scroll basin stand" for Manning. Interestingly several other key elements also point to the cabinetry of Duncan Phyfe: the tight dovetail construction of the upper drawer and the use of mahogany as a secondary wood, as well as the marbleized paper, which is still largely present, on the interior of the work basket.
