Description:

American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Duchesse Dressing Table, c. 1850-1860, attr. to John Henry Belter, New York, reticulated shell crest, shaped mirror, scrolled foliate and dolphin supports; serpentine marble top, c-scroll apron with central bouquet, acanthus carved legs, casters, h. 83 in., w. 51 in., d. 21 in. Provenance: The Service Collection, Estate of Grant A. Oakes, Warren, OH. Ill.: Dubrow, Richard. American Furniture of the 19th Century, 1840-1880. Atglen, PA: Schiffer, 2000, p. 142. Note: The Rococo dressing table or “duchesse” form is rare in the body of work from John Henry Belter, and was apparently a specialty item for the Southern market. Interestingly, the form is seen fairly often in lower Mississippi River Valley collections (including examples documented to the shop of Prudent Mallard in the collection of New Orleans’ Gallier House and Louisiana State Museum 1850 House, as well as other examples at Lansdowne, Natchez, MS; one at Stanton Hall Natchez, MS; and a fourth example from a New Orleans family sold in these rooms as lot 307 October 2007). Ref.: See Otto, Celia. American Furniture of the 19th c. New York: Viking, pl. 286, 282, 291.
