Description:

Samuel Henry Lockett (American, 1837-1891), "The Louisiana State University Topographical Map of Louisiana Showing the Characteristic Features of the Surface of the State in Symbols and Colors Compiled from the Latest and most Authentic Sources with many additions and actual reconnaissance by S.H. Lockett Professor of Engineering Assisted in the drawing by D.M. Brosnan of the class of 1872", hand colored, engraved, folding map by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co., New York, 1873, with original issued boards and a copy of Louisiana As It Is, A Geographical and Topographical Description of the State by Samuel H. Lockett, edited and with an Introduction by Lauren C. Post, Louisiana State University Press, Baton Rouge, 1969, sheet size: 31 1/4 in. x 34 1/2 in.~ Note: conserved and mounted.

  • Notes: Note: The Lockett map is regarded as the most detailed and informative Louisiana map published in the nineteenth century and one of the most important contributions to the cartography of the state. Commissioned by the Louisiana State Legislature in 1869, this was the first comprehensive topographical map of Louisiana ever published. Samuel H. Lockett, a professor of engineering at Louisiana State University, traveled by horse-back, buggy, sulky, train, boat, and even in a mule-hitched army wagon to complete his topographical survey in late 1872, having collected data first-hand from every inch of the state. The original map was seven and one half feet square and as the author himself stated, "probably the largest and most elaborate map ever made of Louisiana" (this original is now on display at the Hill Memorial Library on the LSU campus). Lockett received no compensation from the state for his efforts and hoped to have his map and extensive journal, titled Louisiana As It Is, published for a profit. Editions of the map were issued by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. in 1873, 1882, and 1891 (Original issues of the map are easily identified by the omission of Lincoln Parish in North Central Louisiana; all later editions of the map include Lincoln Parish.) The map's accompanying manuscript was never printed during Lockett's lifetime, but was finally published on the one hundredth anniversary of the project's inception in 1969 by the L.S.U. Press. The 1873 version of the Lockett map is the rarest of all of the printings and is offered here with the originally issued boards. OCLC WorldCat lists only four known copies of the 1873 edition and extensive research indicates that this may very well be the only copy ever offered for public sale.
