Lot 289
Samuel John Lamorna Birch (British, 1869-1955), "A Sunlit Forest Stream", oil on panel, signed and inscribed "To my friend Grafton", 14 in. x 17.5in. E5000/7000 Provenance: Estate of Robert Grafton. Note: In 1902 Birch moved to the Lamorna Cove, Cornwall in Southwest England. His cottage was placed in a wooded valley beside the idyllic setting of a trout stream and would become the source of inspiration for many of his paintings. In the years before World War I, he would amass on the Lamorna grounds a colony of painters that enjoyed his hospitality and the inspiring surroundings. Most likely it was during this time that the American painter Robert Wadsworth Grafton paid a visit to the painter's colony and received this painting as a gift.
