An Antique Santos Carved and Painted Life-Size Cage Doll, head inset with glass eyes, articulated arms, height 70 in. Note: Santos cage dolls were originally created as in-home altars in areas where there were no priests, or during times, such as war, when it was not possible to travel to church. The dolls, which were primarily found in Portuguese or Spanish communities, were often used in Catholic religious processions for which they would be elaborately dressed in beautiful gowns, adorned with wings, or topped with golden crowns.
