E400-600 Note: Born in Anding, Mississippi, the African- American folk artist Sarah Mary Taylor earned national acclaim for her vibrant applique quilts. Raised in the Mississippi Delta, Taylor worked most of her life on a plantation as a cook nanny, field hand and housekeeper. After failing health forced her to retire, Taylor returned to her childhood pastime of quilting. According to Taylor 'I learned to piece by my mother.' Her imaginative and original designs attracted the galleries and museums. Taylor's 'Hand Quilt' was commissioned for the Color Purple film.
