A Rare American Classical Inlaid Satinwood Astragal End Work Table, c. 1815, attributed to Duncan Phyfe, New York, hinged top enclosing an interior fitted with a writing panel, looking glass and two demilune trays; the frieze faced as a drawer, tambour door below ; reeded urn standard, saber legs with waterleaf carving, brass paw feet, casters, height 31 in., width 25 in., depth 12 1/2 in Note: This rare example is part of a very small group of satinwood worktables related to the Phyfe workshop. Others include a table purchased from Phyfe by Victor du Pont for his nice Victorine du Pont Bauduy for her marriage in 1813, and now conserved by the Hagley Museum and Library, Wilmington, Delaware. A second table is conserved by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 1986.84.2). The lot offered here is nearly identical to the Met worktable and shares dimensions and case details with the du Pont example. Reference: Kenny, Brown, Bretter, and Thurlow.
