A Set of Twelve Queen Anne-Style Walnut and Burled Dining Chairs, early 20th c., Schmeig & Kotzian, comprised of two arm and ten side chairs, each stamped "SHK" on seat rail, with arched back, vasiform burled splat, balloon slip seat, shell-carved cabriole legs ending in pad feet, armchairs with scroled shell and leaf-cared arms Note: Karl Schmeig and Henry Kotzian apprenticed in London in the first years of the 20th century, then formed a partnership which they brought to New York City in 1908. The firm was known throughout its fifty-four year existence for fine materials and exacting standards of cabinetmaking. They worked for Art Deco luminaries such as Donald Dusky, Eugene Schoen, and George Tanier, and produced piano cases for Steinway. This suite of chairs bears a rare circular "S H K" stamp indicative of the Hungate partnership of 1911.
