Lot 779
Sir Herbert Edwin Pelham Hughes Stanton, R.A. (British, 1870-1937), "Landscape with Figures", oil on canvas, signed and dated "Hughes- Stanton 1927" lower left, 14 in. x 18 in, in a modern gilded frame. E1500-2500 Note: Hughes-Stanton studied under his father William Hughes (British, 1842-1901), a still-life painter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1897, and was awarded gold medals at the Paris Salons of 1907 and 1908. He painted regularly in France from this time until the outbreak of war in 1914 and became an Official War Artist. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1919 or 1920, he was knighted in 1923. He traveled in the 1930s in Corfu and other Greek locales. This landscape, while difficult to place, seems to be a Continental subject perhaps near the coast of France. The view is well observed, the line and color handled with the facility of long experience and so as to give a clear impression of the transitory effects of light. Reference: J. Johnson & A. Greutzner, Dictionary of British Art, Vol. V, British Artists, 1880-1940, p. 263.
