Description:

Sister Agnes Berchmans (Canada, 1879-1973), "Saint Cecilia", oil on canvas, signed and dated "1918" lower right, Coggins Collection of American Art label and Columbus Museum of Art and Science exhibition label to "Art and Artists of the South: The Robert P. Coggins Collection" label en verso, 23.5in. x 42.25in. E1000-1500 Note: As a teenager, Julia Alma Landry followed her religious calling and entered the Sisters of Charity where she became known as Sister Agnes Berchmans. Her order, recognizing her talents, sent her to Italy to study art with Filadelfo Simi. In keeping with her commitment to her faith, she painted stories from the Bible as well as religious figures including those of saints and martyrs. Remarkably, Sister Agnes continually painted until she was ninety-three years old when failing eyesight forced her to give up creating her artwork.
