Lot 513
Southern/American School, c. 1830s, "Portrait of a Girl of Color with a Hoop and Stick, in a Landscape", oil on canvas, unsigned, 20 in. x 16 in. Provenance: Found in New Orleans, Louisiana. Note: This charming portrait dates from the 1830s, as evidenced by close analogies of costume: exactly the same neckline, shoulders and exaggerated sleeves (together with a wide band at the high waist) appear in a portrait of c. 1830 by Eliza A. DeHarme, in the Louisiana State Museum (Louisiana Portrait Gallery, 1979, p. 328, no. 56); similar forms, with even more closely related sleeves, occur in a painting of 1835 by Catherine J. G. Longchamps, at the Historic New Orleans Collection (Nelson Collection 1996, p. 65, no. 57); equally precise parallels are afforded by an 1835 painting attributed to C. R. Parker, again in the Louisiana State Museum (E. C. Pennington, Downriver, 1991, p. 44); while an 1837 painting signed in New Orleans by Jules Lion also features closely similar pantaloons and slippers (Groves Collection of 19th Century Louisiana Painters, 1971, p. 67). A subject who is perhaps comparable to this sitter is shown in an 1873 "Portrait of a Free Woman of Color", by François Fischbein, the Historic New Orleans Collection (Nelson Collection, 1996, p. 23, no. 16).
