Description:

Southern School, 19th c., "Portrait of a Gentleman: Drausin Valsin Bacas", pastel on paper laid down on canvas, unsigned, Paris framer¹s label, inscription reading "D.V. Wulsin Bacas, N.O." and an illegible French inscription en verso on stretchers, 29 in. x 24 in., in a period glazed oval frame.

  • Notes: Note: Drausin Valsin Bacas was born in New Orleans on September 6, 1813; he was the son of cabinet-maker Bartholome Baptiste Bacas, a veteran of the Battle of New Orleans, and Adelaide Beaulieu, a free person of color. His grandfather, Jean Baptiste Manuel Bacas, was a native of Genoa, Italy, who came to Louisiana via Saint-Domingue. He was married to Marie Louise Catherine Landrony from Arkansas Post (near present-day Gillett, Arkansas) and the family lived on St. Louis Street. On January 5, 1814, Drausin Valsin Bacas was christened at Saint Louis Cathedral. He married Josephine de Tassy Young in 1836 and they had ten children. Sometime prior to 1856, the family traveled upriver, where they eventually settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. This relocation coincided with the changing of their name to Wulsin. Drausin Valsin Bacas died on August 25, 1863 and is buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati according to the announcement of his death that appeared in the New Orleans Bee on September 11, 1863. Of the ten children, three sons, Drausin, Lucien, and Eugene, despite their Southern births, served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Eugene was taken prisoner and died in the infamous Andersonville Prison Camp in Georgia. Drausin survived the war to become a prominent Cincinnati attorney; Lucien also lived through the war and joined the Baldwin Piano Company, eventually becoming the firm¹s president.
