Southern School, mid-19th c., "David Franklin McCrary (1812-1885)" and his wife, "Elizabeth Cowan Lowry McCrary (1826-1901)", each oil on canvas affixed to masonite, unsigned, 28 in. x 23 in. oval and 34 in. x 26 in. oval, respectively, giltwood frames.

  • Provenance: Provenance : Descended in the McCrary family. Note: David Franklin McCrary is most noted as the builder of Magnolia Hall, Greensboro, Alabama. He and his wife, Elizabeth Lowry, were married May 9, 1842 in Green County and later resided in Birmingham. A painting exists, listed in the Smithsonian archives, of Mrs. McCrary, possibly by William Frye or Nicola Marschall. This portrait pair, too, bears a striking resemblance to the style of portraiture practiced by Frye.
