Description:

Southern School, mid-19th c., "Portrait of Hunter with Dog and Rabbit", oil on canvas, unsigned, sight 29.5in. x 24.5in. E3000-5000 Provenance: Estate of Ayres, Henderson and Newman Families of Natchez Mississippi. Note: Interestingly the "Portrait of Hunter with Dog and Rabbit" is similar in terms of style and subject matter to the well- known portrait of "Jean Baptiste Wiltz" in the collection of the Louisiana State Museum. The Wiltz portrait depicts the sportsman in the midst of a swamp hunting ducks, while this painting "Hunter with Dog and Rabbit" shows the results of a successful day of hunting. Charming and unique for nineteenth century portraits, in that they reflect the leisure activity of hunting, this painting by an anonymous artist and the well-known Wiltz portrait share a Deep South antebellum atmosphere.
