Description:

Steele Burden (American/Louisiana, 1900-1995), "At Sunset, Pirogue on the Louisiana Bayou", 1989, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, inscription regarding frame by M. Harville en verso, 18 in. x 30 in., hand-crafted cypress frame. Provenance: Acquired from the artist Note: Well-known for founding the Rural Life Museum and Burden Museum and Gardens on the grounds of his family’s former plantation, Steele Burden also was an accomplished artist working in a variety of media. Burden spent forty years designing the landscape for LSU’s campus, created countless clay and ceramic sculptures representing Louisiana life, and captured the Louisiana landscape he loved through his paintings. An avid historian, Burden’s canvases often depict a timeless Louisiana, as seen in the work offered here. The fading light of a sunset highlights a lone figure rowing home through a murky bayou in what could be the 19th century or 21st century.
